Eagle Scout project transforms Waterloo Senior Center

Scout Kayleigh Ferraro (in wheelbarrel), a member of Troop 7071, Athens County’s only BSA Troop for female scouts, completed her Eagle Scout project Saturday at the Waterloo Senior Center in New Marshfield. Her vision was to enhance the center’s outdoor space by building and planting raised garden beds. On Saturday, local Scouts and Scouters from Troop 7071, Troop 71, Troop 53, and Troop 50, along with Cub Scouts from Pack 71 and Pack 53, and Scouters from Ohio University’s chapter of Epsilon Tau Pi’s Eagle Scout fraternity aided Ferraro with her project.

NEW MARSHFIELD — Scout Kayleigh Ferraro, a member of Troop 7071, Athens County’s only BSA Troop for female scouts, completed her Eagle Scout project Saturday at the Waterloo Senior Center in New Marshfield. Her vision was to enhance the center’s outdoor space by building and planting raised garden beds, creating a fresh and vibrant green area for the residents to enjoy.

BSA Scouts from across Athens County embark on a solar eclipse adventure

BSA scouts and scouters pose while waiting for the total solar eclipse on Monday at Camp Otter Run in East Liberty. The event drew over 70 participants with BSA Packs and Troops from across Athens County, including Pack 53, Pack 71, Troop 50, Troop 53, Troop 71 and Troop 7071.

EAST LIBERTY — BSA scouts and scouters from across Athens County journeyed to Camp Otter Run in East Liberty for a once-in-a-lifetime experience: witnessing the total solar eclipse. The event drew over 70 participants with several local BSA Packs and Troops, including Pack 53, Pack 71, Troop 50, Troop 53, Troop 71 and Troop 7071.

Athens County's only BSA Troop for girls earns gold in Journey to Excellence program

BSA Troop 7071 of Athens County achieved the level of gold in the BSA Journey to Excellence award program. Such recognition is a testament to the hard work, dedication, and commitment of the scouts and their leaders. It demonstrates their outstanding performance in delivering a quality scouting program and adherence to the Boy Scouts of America principles.

Brothers celebrate earning Eagle Scout rank together

Three brothers — Cade, Will and Zane Buckley — recently celebrated earning the Boy Scouts of America’s highest rank — Eagle Scout — during a ceremony held at First United Methodist Church in Athens.
One of the requirements for Eagle Scout is the successful planning, execution, and completion of a service project for their community.

Scouts BSA Daybreak District Scouter Keith Milam Honored

Keith Milam, scoutmaster with Boy Scout Troop 71 and Cubmaster with Pack 71 chartered by the Athens First United Methodist Church, was announced as the recipient of the Boy Scouts Scoutmaster of the Year and also received the Scouts BSA Unit Leader Award of Merit.

Local Scouts trek through New Mexico wilderness

After months of planning and preparation, a crew of seven teenage Scouts and four
adult leaders from Athens went on a life-changing summer backpacking trek
through the Sangre de Cristo Mountains at Philmont Scout Ranch in Cimarron, New
Mexico.
Philmont spans 140,171 acres and covers over 220 square miles of vast wilderness
with trails that climb from 6,500 feet to as high as 12,441 feet.

Two Athens County Eagle Scouts to travel to South Korea for World Scout Jamboree

The 24th World Scout Jamboree, held in West Virginia, is show here. Ben Maskiell and Isabelle Stowe, both Athens County residents, were selected to be part of the USA contingent at the 25th World Scout Jamboree in South Korea, Aug. 1-12.

Rising senior at Alexander High School, Ben Maskiell, son of Rich and Jen Maskiell, and rising sophomore at Athens High School, Isabelle Stowe, daughter of David Stowe and Melissa Myers, were selected to be part of the USA contingent at the 25th World Scout Jamboree in South Korea, Aug. 1-12.

Nelsonville scout honored

Leighton Loge

Athens County officials declared Saturday, April 9 as Leighton Loge Day.

Loge of First United Methodist Church of Nelsonville BSA Troop 364 was awarded the rank of Eagle Scout at a ceremony held at the church, Saturday evening attended by family, friends, fellow scouts and special guests.

Athens has its first Scouts BSA Troop for girls

Athens County officially received approval from Scouts BSA Simon Kenton Council
to charter its first BSA Troop for girls on Feb. 2. The newly chartered troop was
granted the numerical BSA Troop designation 7071 and will become part of the
larger unit 71 of Athens County.
The Kiwanis Club of Athens will serve as the troop chartering organization, while
the First United Methodist Church in Uptown Athens as a strong supporting
partner

Community Leaders Recognized at Athens Scout Leadership Dinner

Ron Hope was honored as the 2021 Keith Butt Scouter Award at the annual Athens Scout Leadership Dinner for the Simon Kenton Council Boy Scouts of America (BSA). Jenny Stotts was also presented with the Scouting Community Leader Award for her many years of service in the community.

Local Scout earns Eagle rank

Eagle Scout Parker Colvin and his gaga pit project.

Parker Colvin, a Boy Scout in the Simon Kenton Council-East District, recently earned the rank of Eagle Scout with Athens Troop 71.

One rank requirement is to plan, develop, and give leadership to others in a service project helpful to any religious institution, school or community. Colvin’s project was to design and construct a portable indoor/outdoor sixteen-sided gaga ball pit from recycled wood freight shipping pallets for the Christ Community Wesleyan Church Youth Group in Albany. Gaga ball is a variant of dodge ball.

Nelsonville Scouts Camp Safely

Boy Scout Troop 364 of First United Methodist Church Nelsonville camped for a week in July at Muskingum Valley Scout Reservation near Coshocton, one of only three BSA camps in Ohio that met all safety requirements of local, regional, and national authorities, such as temperature checks, each scout sleeping in his own tent, and interacting with only small groups called cohorts.

Nelsonville FUMC Cub Scout Pack 364 Hosts Pinewood Invitational

Winners of the 2020 Nelsonville First United Methodist Church Cub Scout Pack 364 Pinewood Derby Invitational are: 1st Liam Kline of Nelsonville, 2nd Allan Newlun of Lancaster and 3rd Nerick Tolliver of Nelsonville.

NELSONVILLE – With no district Pinewood Derby scheduled this year, the Cub Scouts of First United Methodist Church Nelsonville stepped up to fill the void hosting their first Regional Pinewood Derby Invitational. Scouts from Athens, Hocking and Fairfield Counties were among the 40 people who attended March 6.

Local Boy Scouts attend World Scout Jamboree

Two local scout groups recently attended the 24th World Scout Jamboree at Bechtel Summit Reserve in West Virginia. From July 21-Aug. 2, the United States is hosting some 40,000 youth and adult leaders from 200 nations and territories representing over 160 national scout organizations. For the first time, the jamboree is hosted by three scout organizations:
